AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE STATUS OF SAFETY PRACTICES IN WOOD WORKSHOPS OF TECHNICAL COLLEGES IN NIGER STATE
ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to investigate the status of safety practice in wood workshops of technical colleges in Niger State. The study was guided by four research questions and four null hypotheses. The study used survey research design. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 132 graduate and non graduate technical teachers. The instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire on an investigation into the status of safety practice in wood workshops of technical colleges. The Cronbach alpha method was used to test the internal consistency of the instrument and the average value of Cronbach Alpha for the questionnaire is 0.08. Mean was used to answer the research questions, while t-test was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study showed that few safety practice are available in wood workshops, safety equipment and materials are inadequate, causes of accident are more in the workshops and appropriate teaching methods and instructional materials are not often used. The study made some recommendations on how improve safety practices in wood workshops of technical colleges in Niger State.
