ENTREPRENEURIAL SKILLS NEEDED BY STUDENTS OF ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE WORKS IN THE TECHNICAL COLLEGES IN ONDO STATE

Abstract

The study was carried out to determine entrepreneurial skills needed by students of electrical installation and maintenance works in the technical college in Ondo State. Five research questions guided the study while five null hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted  a survey research design. The population for this study was 275 which comprises of 25 electrical technology teachers and 250 electrical graduates of technical colleges in Ondo State.  There was no sampling because of manageable size of the population. The instrument used for data collection was structured questionnaire. Three experts validated the instrument. Internal consistency of the questionnaire was determined using cronbach alpha reliability method and reliability coefficient values of 0.72, 0.81, 0.78, 0.76, and 0.74 were obtained for sections A, B, C, D and E respectively, while overall reliability coefficient of 0.82 was obtained for the total sections. Mean and standard deviation were used to analyze the data for answering research questions while t-test analysis was used to test the hypotheses of no significant difference at 0.05 level of significance. The study found thrat 20 technical skills, 20 marketing skills, 20 management skills, 20 financial management skills and 20 communication skills were needed by students of electrical installation and maintenance works in the technical colleges in Ondo State. There was no significant difference between the mean responses of respondents on the technical, marketing, financial, management, and communication skills needed by students of electrical installation and maintenance works in the technical colleges in Ondo State. Based on these findings, it was recommended that all the identified skills should be integrated into electrical installation and maintenance work curriculum of technical colleges in Nigeria.
