ENTREPRENEURIAL SKILLS NEEDED BY TECHNICAL COLLEGE STUDENTS FOR ESTABLISHING RADIO AND TELEVISION SMALL AND MEDIUM SCALE ENTERPRISE IN KOGI STATE

Abstract

The study was carried out to determine entrepreneurial skills needed by students in radio and television for establishing small and medium scale enterprises. Five research questions guided the study while five null hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted survey research design. The population for the study comprised 32 teachers of radio and television and 44 radio and television technicians. There was no sampling because of the manageable size of the population. The instrument used for data collection was structured questionnaire. Three experts validated the instrument. Cronbach alpha reliability method was used to determine the internal consistency of the instrument and 0.82 reliability coefficient was obtained. Mean and standard deviation were used to analyze the data for answering research questions while t-test analysis was used to test the hypotheses of no significant difference at 0.05 level of significance. The study found that twenty three technical skills, eighteen managerial skills, twenty two financial skills, twenty five marketing skills and twenty one communication skills are needed by radio and television students for establishing small and medium scale enterprise. The study also found that there was no significant difference in the mean responses of teachers and technicians of radio and television on the technical, managerial, financial, marketing, and communication skills needed by radio and television students for establishing small and medium scale enterprises. Based on these findings, it was recommended that all the skills identified in this study should be packed and incorporated into radio and television curriculum to train students of technical colleges. It was also recommended that the facilities for effective implementation of the identified skills should be provided by government and employers of technical college graduates.
