ABSTRACT

The study examines family relations and parenting styles as correlates of emotional intelligence among Adolescents in Onitsha north local government area of Anambra state. The objective of the study was to find out the extent to which family relations relates with the emotional intelligence of adolescents in Onitsha north Anambra State. And also, if parenting styles will relates with the emotional intelligence of adolescents in Onitsha north Anambra State. A total of two hundred (200) adolescents were selected using convenience sampling method. The sample comprises of hundred males (100) and hundred (100) females. Three instruments were used to measure the various variables involved, which includes: Index of Family Relations (IFR) by Hudson (1982), Parental Care Scale by Baumrid (1971) and Indigenous Emotional Intelligence scale by Afolabi (2017). Two hypotheses were tested. The design and statistics used for the study was correlation design and Pearson product moment correlation respectively. Two hypothesis were tested and the results shows that that family relation relates with emotional intelligence r (198) = -.182^*, P>.05 and parenting style relates with emotional intelligence among adolescents in Onitsha north local government area in Anambra state r (198) = -.550^**, P<.01. Based on the finding it was recommended that, parents should encourage and ensure a good family relationship with their children so as promote the good family life they envisage for their children. It was also suggested that Studies in this area of knowledge should be focused on experimental factors that may contribute to family relations and parenting styles as correlate of emotional intelligence.
