MANAGERIAL STRATEGIES EMPLOYED BY PRINCIPALS IN HANDLING INDISCIPLINE AMONG PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ANAMBRA STATE.
ABSTRACT
The study investigated indiscipline in secondary schools in Anambra state with the purpose of finding out the strategies for handling indiscipline or misconduct among students in secondary schools. Hence the purpose of the study was to find out strategies employed by principals in handling indiscipline among students in public secondary schools in Anambra State. The study employed descriptive survey research design. The sample comprised all the 257 principals, hence there is no sampling technique. Three research questions were raised and answered while two hypotheses were formulated and tested. The population consisted of all the principals from the 257 government own schools in Anambra state. A Structured questionnaire named Managerial Strategies in Handling Indiscipline among Students Questionnaires (MSHIASQ) with thirty-four (34) items, which is on a Likert-type scale was used in collecting data. A split-half method was used to test the reliability of the instrument by given 15 copies of the questionnaires to 15 principals in Owerri Education zone in Imo state. The data collected were analyzed and interpreted using Mean and Standard Deviation for Research Questions. t-test was used to test the hypotheses, and were tested at .05 level of significance. Two theories were also adopted for this study which are social learning theory and psychosocial theory of development. The study looked into types of indiscipline and the strategies for handling them. The findings discovered that all the Principals in public secondary schools in Anambra state agree that they employ all the listed strategies in handling indiscipline among students but mostly employ the use of guidance counselors, enhancing effective communication, close monitoring of students behaviour and expulsion.
