RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MARITAL CONFLICT AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF PART-TIME UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN CHUKWUEMEKA ODUMEGWU OJUKWU UNIVERSITY, IGBARIAM CAMPUS.
ABSTRACT
The study examined the relationship between marital conflict and academic achievement of married part-time students of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam Campus. The study was guided by five research questions and five null hypotheses tested at .05 level of significance. Related literature was reviewed under conceptual framework, theoretical framework, theoretical studies and empirical studies. The study was anchored on the role theory, the marital communication theory and structural theory of conflict. The study adopted correlation research design. The population of the study consisted of 475 part-time married undergraduate students. Stratified random sampling technique was used to select 140 part-time students. The instrument developed by the researcher was titled Marital Conflict Questionnaire (MCQ) was used for data collection. The instrument was subjected to face and content validation. The reliability for marital conflict questionnaire was established using Cronbach Alpha Coefficient of value of 0.82. The instrument was administered to the respondents by the researcher and two trained research assistants. Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was used to analyze the data. The result of this study revealed that there is a moderate negative correlation between marital conflict and academic achievement of undergraduate part-time students. The results also showed that there is a moderate negative correlation between marital conflict and academic achievement of male, female, experienced and inexperienced undergraduate part-time students. The study showed a significant negative relationship between marital conflict and academic achievement of male, female, experienced and inexperienced undergraduate part-time students. The study therefore recommended among others that part-time undergraduate students experiencing marital conflict should consult trained psychologists for help and proper direction.
