THE IMPLICATION OF POLITICAL VIOLENCE ON DEMOCRATIC CONSOLIDATION IN NIGERIA A STUDY OF OLUSEGUN OBASANJO’S CIVILIAN ADMINISTRATION
ABSTRACT
Political violence was a recurring issue in former president Olusegun Obasanjo’s civilian administration between 1999 and 2007. This study therefore sets out to examine its implications on democratic consolidation in Nigeria. In order to do that, the researcher aimed at finding out the impacts of political violence in his administration on democratic consolidation in Nigeria, the cases of political violence and the indicators of democratic consolidation in the administration. The liberal theory was used as the theoretical framework while the interpretive category of qualitative method of data analysis was used to analyze the data obtained and used for this study. After carrying out the study, the researcher found that not only were there cases of political violence and indicators of democratic consolidation in former president Olusegun Obasanjo’s civilian administration but that the political violence impacted negatively on our democracy. Thus, the researcher recommends that our politicians down to the masses, should learn from the series of political violence that occurred between 1999 and 2007 in the country to avoid such or even more happening again, avoid things that can cause political violence, put the country’s interest above their personal interest and always remember that the consolidation of our democracy, is a continuous process.
