Women in Patriarchal System: A Study of Kaine Agary’s Yellow-Yellow, Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo’s Trafficked and Nnamdi Okagbue’s Chika’s Shattered Dreams

Abstract

Women’s issues have become a special area of interest to policy makers, researchers, educators and human right activists. This is because women are believed to be marginalized and deprived in many ways. They are inhibited by restrictions imposed by tradition and culture. Culture and tradition have been identified as contributory factors in the downgrading of women. This is perpetuated through myths, superstitions and other artificial barriers. This study highlighted women and patriarchy in Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo’s Trafficked, Kaine Agary’s Yellow-Yellow and Nnamdi Okagbue’s Chika’s Shattered Dreams. These novels show how women were used as toys by men. Accomodationist Feminism is adopted as theoretical framework. It is also discovered at the end of the research, that the necessity for economic independence on women’s part would be achieved through industry and firmness of purpose. This is the surest means by which a woman can reject all social shackles. The researcher did analytical studies of the works and discovered that the patriarchal society undermines the rights of women, hence, the need for them to fight for their emancipation in the African society.
